Background Information about Host Institution

Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex is a Federal Government owned tertiary health institution and it provides tertiary health care services to several states in Nigeria, including Osun, Oyo, Ondo, Edo and Ogun State. The hospital was established as Ife Teaching Hospital Complex in 1975 to complement the newly established Faculty of Health Sciences of the then University of Ife, however the name was changed to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex in 1987 in honor of Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo the Premier of Western Region who was instrumental establishing the University and the hospital. The philosophy behind hospital is the emphasis on primary health care provision which resulted in the hospital being decentralized. OAUTHC has six (6) units with the main hospital located in Ile-Ife, there is the Wesley Guild hospital in Ilesa, and a primary health care centre in Imesi-Ile also in Osun state. The hospital has 842 beds in all.
The hospital is affiliated to Obafemi Awolowo University for the training of medical students and is accredited to train specialist doctors in more than 20 medical, surgical and dental sub-specialties.

Objectives of Assignment

Transfer of knowledge to health care professionals and improved quality of mental health care to the population served by the hospital.

Output/Deliverables

  • Improved training of resident doctors in child and adolescent mental health and psychoactive substance use
  • International collaboration in research in mental health
  • Improved clinical management of the patients with mental health challenges
  • Enhancement of practical skills in child and adolescents mental health
  • Enhancement of practical skills in psychoactive substance use disorder
  • Enhancement of practical skills in community mental health practice

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

To transfer knowledge, improve and enhance skills in the areas highlighted in IV above

Required Competencies

The incumbent is expected to demonstrate the following values and competences:

  1. Ability to utilize available psychological techniques in the care of patients
  2. Ability in the design and implementation of programs
  3. Capacity to design, execute and implement translational research
  4. Capacity for improved research in mental health
  5. Capacity in post graduate training in mental health

Education and Experience

Education

Fellowship or its equivalents in mental health and related fields

Experience

  • 5 years post fellowship or post graduate
  • 5 years experience in clinical practice

Language Requirements

Fluency in English is required
