On 26 April, IOM the Netherlands attended the Great Nigerian Diaspora Summit in Almere, organized by NIDO Europe (Nigerian Diaspora Organization).
The Summit opened with various high level speeches, including the Ambassador of Nigeria to the Netherlands. Ambassador Ngofa invited the Nigerian diaspora to contribute human and financial resources for the development of Nigeria, stressing the importance of knowledge transfer. He further emphasized the importance of remittances for poverty reduction efforts. Dr. Badewa Adejugbe-Williams delivered a speech on behalf of the Senior Special Advisor to the President on Foreign and Diaspora Affairs. The speech highlighted the importance of diaspora engagement for knowledge transfer and the business environment, among other areas.
IOM the Netherlands addressed the room regarding the possible extension of the CD4D project, which would include Nigeria. IOM invited all Nigerian diaspora members in the Netherlands to become engaged if the project is realized, which was received positively.
Interesting panels were held on investment in renewable energies and diaspora voting mechanisms. Present members of the diaspora were clearly passionate about contributing to their country of origin, with many already engaged in such activities.
IOM the Netherlands is grateful to NIDO NL Chapter for the invitation and hopes to collaborate in the future.
